I've been hearing quite a bit recently about the fact that the majority of Bama fans aren't UA grads. While there is no doubt that it is true, my question is, does it matter? In the northeast, CFB isn't important enough for those who did not graduate from their state school to care. The same pretty much applies everywhere except in the BIG 12 and SEC. We, in those regions, tend to pull for CFB teams that are near where we are from.

I guess that I've said all that to ask this:
Did most of you posters go to UA? If not, where did you go? Should it matter that we have a large fanbase that didn't attend the university?

I say the more the merrier! Jump on a winner. I went to crappy-a$$ UNA and a community college. Both were horrible. But, I was a BAMA fan before attending those schools. What do ya'll think?

I'm not an alum, or a student to UA in Tuscaloosa (I go to UA in Huntsville, I don't know if that counts Very Happy), but I look at it like this. I grew up a Bama fan, my dad grew up a Bama fan, and both my grandpa's we're Bama fans. Did I need to be a UA grad to cheer for the Tide when I was a kid? I don't think so. Heck I've never been to Tuscaloosa myself. (Although I've promised myself I'll get season tickets before I die.) But that doesn't stop me from cheering on the team my family has cheered on for the past 2 generations.

Just one of the beautiful things about being from Alabama, it is a family tradition to pull for the TIDE!

You may or may not know this, but the fact of the matter is.....many AU posters on the net will focus on this when talking about BAMA fans as opposed to the Auburn fans. This isn't only relative to places like the northeast.

It's not uncommon to get into discussions with Auburn fans on the internet and hear them talk down to you or your fanbase as "sidewalk alumni". Meaning, people who didn't go to school there but claim to support the team. In fact, I've seen AU posters on this site disparage the average BAMA fan as a toothless redneck that only likes BAMA because of the days the "BAR" was there, implying that we're a bunch of bandwagon jumpers.

Having said that, I'm not a UA grad. I went to several colleges but none were in Tuscaloosa. I am a Tide fan because it's what I grew up knowing.

To be totally honest (and this isn't a knock on Auburn) when I was a younger kid my parents were in the Air Force so I grew up in a lot of different places. During that time though I always knew where I came from. I also noticed that my parents ;iked Alabama, so I guess I just followed suite. You know....supporting the home folk and all. I honestly did not know there was an Auburn University in the state of Alabama until I was maybe 11 or 12. My folks watched BAMA, my family supported BAMA, so I did as well. I mean,......BAMA's the state school right? So that's the school I chose to follow. It's Alabama after all. It's my home state's university.

Having said all that, I guess I'm a sidewalk alum. I guess I'm just one of those unlucky BAMA fans who didn't get to attend a school like Auburn and study crop rotation, thus insuring my place within the fandom pantheon.

As far as graduating from a particular school goes, and being a fan,....it doesn't matter. Heck, when it comes to Pro sports you see this all the time. Especially in the South. How many people are Atlanta Braves fans and they don't live in Atlanta. What about New Orleans? Nashville? Did these people play for the above named organizations? Did they work for them? No. Just like not every Yankee or Red Sox fan lives in one of those cities or has played/worked for them.

There are a lot of Pro sports fans out there (northern and southern) who just elect to support a team for whatever reason that seems important to them.

I expected this response when I posted this topic. I am just happy to hear that you guys are like me in the sense that we all seem to pull for who our dads did. I see that as extreme loyalty. If my dad was a Colorado State fan, I would probably pull for them also. Luckily, my Dad was from Alabama, played college baseball for Montevallo. In a way, I'm a Montevallo fan too.

Sonny Lubick had some nice teams too. Wink Smile I'm not opposed to Col State until they play Air Force every year.

I have been an Alabama fan all my life, mainly because my Dad was. My first Alabama game was as a six or seven year old, Alabam versus Southern Miss at Crampton Bowl in Montgomery when Red Drew coached the Tide. When it came time to pick colleges, Samford (then Howard) offered a very nice scholarship that paid all the education costs except textbooks and I could live at home and go to school there, and I graduated from Samford. Still, that did not change my love for the Tide, though I do cheer for the Bulldogs (Samford version) as well.
