| Quote: | Jim Wells is Exhibit A that fans need to let a season play out before starting a meltdown to get rid of every coach of every team that struggles at some point in a season.
Six or seven weeks ago I wouldn't have given you a plug nickle for the Alabama baseball team's chances of even making the SEC Tournament. Somewhere along the way things clicked. A very young team with untested pitching began to play together better, cut down on costly errors and began knocking the cover off the ball.
I don't have time to do the research, but this UA team has scored in double digits an impressive number of times in the second half of the season. All in all, this has turned out to be a very good baseball team.
I'm not saying Alabama's going to win a national title this year, or even this regional, but clearly those calling for Wells' head were jumping the gun. And it seems like UA will lose very little to the MLB draft (I never understood why they called it the amateur draft since it's pro teams doing the drafting -- what, do they also have a draft where the draft guys who are already pros?) this year. So the future looks bright.
We seem to be in an age, at least on the anonymous Internet, where the microwave society is producing fans who want to fire every coach who loses a game. In this environment, Gene Stallings probably would have forever alienated most fans on this board with his 0-3 start. Joe Kines was blistered by fans after his first season back as defensive coordinator, and anyone in the business will tell you he's one of the best.
So next time you get frustrated with your team before the season has even played out, sit back and relax just a minute and remind yourself that patience is a virtue. |

I confess. I was ready to run Stallings off after three games in his first year, and never really accepted him until he beat the Barn at the end of that year. I was one of those who was against his hiring, and I was highly incensed after Louisville put a thrashing on us in that year's bowl game. Fortunately the decision makers did not listen to me.

9 times out of 10, the ones calling for his head are people who have never seen a game all year. Funny how that happens.

True, true.
On this very forum it was said, "give him the time."
