Im driving a 1998 Chevy Silverado with 175000 miles on it and gas prices are killing me. Im thinking about getting a good used car that gets good gas mileage. What do you recommend? I want something in the 30 mpg plus range. Im a big guy so i really dont want a car where i have to fall in and climb out id rather climb in an fall out, if you know what i mean.

I have a 98 GMC and am in the same boat. I drive my wife's car to work because I drive 60 miles one way.
I have been giving serious thought to a motorcycle to alleviate some of the pain at the gas pump.

I have a 2005 Dodge Durango. It get great gas mileage... LOL
My wifes car does very well. She has a 2002 honda civic that gets about 32 mileage to the gallon around town.

If you're looking for dependability and good mileage, it's hard to beat a Civic. I read a review of the new Matrix this week and it got high marks, but it's a new car. A used Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla would be among my first choices. I put 256,000 on a Civic and 257,000 on a Toyota pickup. If you need a truck (I miss mine), a small pickup might be good middle ground for you.
I'm driving 52 miles round trip in a '77 Vette. I telework some and also carpool with a coworker, so I usually drive it two or three times a week. 15 to 17 mpg is typical for me.
I honestly believe the price of gas is starting to change consumer behavior. Demand is down, and I swear traffic has been lighter here in Atlanta the last two weeks or so.

In my exprience, regarding mpg, you can't beat a Honda civic 5-speed.

My work car is a Pontiac G6 GT. It has the smaller v6(3.5 liter with auto trans) and gets 30-31 mpg on the highway and averages 24 mpg. They make a 3.9 v6 and a 4 cyl. motor for it that gets about 5 more mpg. I am over 6-2 and really like it. It has plenty of room up front for big folks.
I would recommend this car if you commute mostly on the highway. I have read that their mpg drops down pretty low for city driving for some people. The Huntsville Pontiac dealer runs ads for them at less than $15 for the 4cyl version.

| Since you seem to enjoy driving a truck, you might want to look at some of the smaller SUV's like the Ford Escape or something about that size. They get mid to high 20's on some of them (at least they claim to)

Get yourself a Diesel Volkswagen.
42mpg city/ 50+ on the HWY, plus there are fuel mods you can do that will push it past that. You cannot beat that.
The rinky dink hybrids aren't worth your time. You'll never recoup the cost of all that extra equipment and batteries in the gas saved department. Its just a feel good green thing.
Plus if you're really hard up, you can always do bio-diesel.
