When you get up early during the week for work it's hard not to on Saturday's. So, this morning, I found myself looking over ESPN360 to see what games they had on replay and decided I'd look at what UK has on the hardwood this year.

Hell, I've been a fan of UK for a long, long time. I'm talking dating back to one of my childhood idol's, Kyle Macy. So, after cheating by looking at the score before watching the game, I'm wondering what Billy Gillespie is feeling this morning.

We all know the phrase "Croomed" when it comes to upsets in football. Now, ESPN is coining the phrase, "Garner Webbed," and rightfully so.

I know UK fans aren't happy this morning. Heck, I can't say I'm happy at their loss. But, I am intrigued.

VMI just took it to UK last night. Their shooting percentage was good, not great, but solid. Literally, it was one of those games that while watching it I wondered if the word "pass" was in their vocabulary early on as it seemed they were intent on shooting at every given opportunity.

And oh my, did they.

Season opening loss, at home, for UK against VMI.

Gracious. Shocked

I watched a good bit of that game on Sports South last night. It is one of those typical mid major versus big guy things. VMI basically put 5 small forward/guard types on the floor, and they all could shoot the three. They lined them up at the three point line. Their PG would penetrate, and when a Ky player went to help they'd kick out to the open man, who usually drained a three. Kentucky's big guys (Stephenson and Patterson) had to go and defend on the perimeter, which they did not do very well.

VMI was also interesting on defense. They pressed, got in passing lanes, went for steals. If that did not work out they didn't seriously contest the resulting easy shot, just pushed the ball in a hurry to the other end and got back into their offense. This is a difficult approach to play against.

Kentucky is just not Kentucky this year, IMO. Their two inside guys are pretty good. Other than Meeks they look weak on the perimeter. They are at least a couple of recruiting classes away from getting back to the level they are accustomed to.
