SEC Tourney Time: Round 2
By Shipley00
VS
Previous Game:
If I told you Alabama went on a 4 ˝ minute stretch without scoring a point during the second half, would you said they would have won? What if I told you they went on TWO such 4 ˝ minute stretches, without scoring, what then? What if I told you, excluding the final two meaningless free throws by Riley, that Alabama went 10-21 from the charity stripe, how about now? The last few games Alabama had done a few things better than they have all season. Free throws had improved, but not last night. Major scoring droughts had disappeared, until last night. Fortunately the final two things they’ve had going for them keep going. Improved perimeter defense and Mykal Riley. How on earth could Mykal Riley outdo his performance on Senior night? Well, he tied an Alabama record with Eight 3-pointers, scored 26… again, and pulled 10 boards to make it a Double-Double. Hedrix was no slouch either, scoring 22 points and pulling down at team high 13 boards…
Double-Double!
Alabama played lights out in the first half on offense while shutting Florida down on defense. Donovan gave credit where credit was due.
| Quote: | "It's hard for me to be excited going forward because I don't see things getting fixed," Donovan said.
"It's in front of our guys, what it takes to win. For whatever reason, I haven't brought it out in them. They're not committed to it. ... I'm not really excited about seeing this group of guys being sophomores."
"You can't lose three [NBA] lottery picks for the first time in the history of the sport, lose five NBA players and the leading 3-point shooter in the history of the NCAA tournament and not expect to miss a beat," Donovan said. |
Oh well, I guess the only reason Alabama won was because Florida was young. I’ll take it.
Current Game:
Ok. Everyone say it with me.
“They do have a chance! They can win the game against Florida!.. err I mean Mississippi State”
Hey, it worked once, right? Florida was young, two Freshman, blah blah blah. There aren’t any such excuses for the Bulldogs, because they don’t need them. They won the West based on defense. They are the best defensive team in the SEC leading in blocks, 3-point defense, scoring defense, and… surprise… overall defense. That can only be helped in tournament time by the “Let them play” mentality.
Some say Alabama matches up well with MSU: They are both in the bottom of the league in Free throw percentage. Their leading scorers are both Juniors scoring just over 17 points each. Both teams have two players in the top 10 in rebounding. Despite this, Alabama will be a big underdog, with nothing to lose.
With the leading shot blocker in the SEC guarding Hendrix, someone else will have to step up for the Tide. Coleman and Jemison have provided some quality minutes, but the MSU defensive plan will be simple: Shut down Hendrix inside, and shadow Riley outside. Will Alabama have the same fire tonight as the last two nights? Riley has the fire. Hendrix has the fire. Who will catch it next? Tune in tonight at 6:30 central to find out.
Roll Tide.
Probable Starters for the Tide:
F Richard Hendrix 17.7 ppg/ 10.1 rpg
G Alonzo Gee 14.6 ppg/ 6.9 rpg
G Mikal Riley 14.5 ppg/ 42.5% 3-pointers
G Rico Pickett 5.9 ppg
F Demetrius Jemison 5.6 ppg
Next on Tap:
Winner of Georgia/Kentucky on Saturday 2:15 central on Raycom

We can win this game. It will take another defensive effort like last night, but this will be a different kind of game. They don't like to run. They love their half court defense and their half court offense. This game will be a grinder. We need to take care of the basketball, take good shots, and defend the perimeter against Stewart and Hansboro. Gordon is a tough matchup for anyone, but we do need to make him work to bring the ball up. We've had two tough losses against them. It will be physical. It would be a big help if we had a good day at the foul line.

| Up by seven at the half. Could've been better, but it's hard to complain.

It's not hard for me. There were 4 options in the inbounds scenario. 5 seconds on the clock, time running out to inbound the ball. Here they are in order of best to worst
1. Call Timeout-try again
2. Throw the ball in on OUR end.
3. Hold the ball and turn it over.
4. Throw it to the opponed goal.
1-3 and MSU doesn't score
#4 Best case scenario our guy catches the ball, but is too far away to score.
Worst case scenario... what just happened.
I hate those "just not thinking" mistakes.
